Spring is finally around the corner, bringing with it sunshine, brightly colored flowers, and (of course) spring cleaning! As dog parents, cleaning can introduce some concerns surrounding the health and safety of your canine best friend. Many common household chemicals are highly toxic for your dog and should be avoided.
To create a dog-friendly home, we need to make sure that we are using pet-safe cleaning products. This includes the cleaning solutions used to clean your floors, wash your dog’s beds, and even clean your own laundry. Luckily, there are many great options that will leave our homes both looking and smelling fresh!
Of course, we haven’t forgotten about your dog. As part of your spring cleaning ritual, we’re sure they could use a bit of a spa treatment.

Keeping their paws clean is tough to do in the spring up here in northern MN. We wipe them off and even go so far as to move the snow so the ground dries up quicker. It can be a battle for March and April.

I live in the country so the girls bring in lots of stuff hanging on the feathers and beards. I keep a towel at the front door, to wipe off their feet. I vacuum almost daily. I also vacuum their beds in between washes. They have several beds in the house, even though they sleep with me. I put large washable under their feed and water bowl. I do wash their bowls daily as well as vacuum around the feed bowls for the bits of food they drop. I do my own grooming. My girls get a brushing several times a week. I do a detailed grooming and clipping about every 3 weeks and they get a bath or touch up depending on how dirty they are. I don’t like to bath them too much so their skin will dry out. They get their teeth brushed every day. I guess I am lucky because my girls don’t shed.
Constant vacuuming! I have never vacuumed so much in my life til I got a dog.
Frequent baths!
I have a German Shepherd who sheds all year. I have to vacuum almost everyday to keep the hair away! Also cleaning his bedding (and mine, he seems to like my bed more then his) often. He gets a good brushing often to try and reduce the hair that piles up in the house. He absolutely hates baths, so I try to keep him as clean as possible without baths. He gets a bath every month or two. But it’s all worth it, because he is a wonderful dog!
